All MCU posters for their 21 movies so far get dissected by 26-year veteran Hollywood movie poster artist, James Verdesoto. The illustrator behind iconic one-sheets for Pulp Fiction, Ocean’s Eleven, Y Tu Mama Tambien, The Last Samurai, and Training Day, he is the owner and creative director of Indika Entertainment Advertisement and has created over 400 one-sheets for various studios.

Marvel Studios has come out with 20 movies in its first decade with three more confirmed on the docket and countless ones being developed. Alongside each film is a carefully crafted marketing campaign which includes several publicity materials such as trailers and posters. The popularity of the MCU films has led to various analysis of all aspects of their sustainable business model from different people. However, very little has been said about their one-sheets until now.

In a video by Vanity Fair, Verdesoto dissected every single MCU poster from 2008 providing other one-sheets from classic movies that they may have been inspired from. Captain America: Civil War’s was compared to Lone Wolf McQuade, as well as usual boxing match promo images; Iron Man’s safe composite and the use of black spaces was similar to Spawn; and Captain Marvel’s recent one-sheet is reminiscent of The Crow’s. Some of the more interesting comments come from the first Guardians of the Galaxy poster which Verdosoto describing it with a contemporary edge which the overall movie had. Meanwhile, The Avengers poster has a noticeably bigger title which he said was a way to better associate the film with the Marvel brand. Watch the full clip below:

While Marvel Studios has come out with varying kinds of one-sheets over the last 10 years, the last couple of ones seem a little bit too similar. Since last year’s Thor: Ragnarok until this summer’s Ant-Man & the Wasp with Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War in between, the MCU has used the same poster format - at least for their ensemble pieces. Prior to that, Spider-Man: Homecoming’s version was widely mocked online due to its chaotic appearance. Thankfully, the posters weren’t an indication of their corresponding films’ quality. If anything, the last few films of the franchise have been distinctly different from one another, which could be a move to address recurring criticisms that Marvel films are formulaic and all too similar.

Marvel Studios has already released the first poster for Avengers: Endgame although since it’s just the superhero team’s updated logo, it wasn’t included in the list. Considering that the MCU has stuck to a one-sheet format in recent years, it’ll be interesting if they’ll change things up when it comes to the Phase 3 capper, especially since the number of characters in the film is significantly scaled down. As for Captain Marvel, the public can expect an ensemble poster to follow the first character one-sheet for the upcoming movie.
