Diana Prince is coming back in her second solo film Wonder Woman 1984, and thanks to EW’s latest cover story, new images and details from the film have been revealed. DC’s movie universe (unofficially titled DC Extended Universe) is going through major changes after its first wave of films didn’t perform as expected, particularly Justice League, but many of the characters that have already been introduced will continue to be part of this universe. Among those is Wonder Woman, whose big screen debut is one of the strongest entries in the DCEU so far.

How Diana Meets Cheetah In Wonder Woman 1984

Among the new characters viewers will meet in Wonder Woman 1984 is Barbara Ann Minerva, best known as Cheetah. In the comics, Minerva is an archeologist and heir of a vast fortune, who loves to go after artifacts considered to be legendary. This leads her to search out a tribe in Africa which has a female guardian with the powers of a cheetah. This guardian is later revealed to be the bride of an ancient plant God named Urzkartaga. After a band of marauders kill the guardian and many others, Barbara agrees to take her place, more so after learning this would grant her immortality. Unfortunately for her, Urzkartaga won’t take a woman who isn’t a virgin and instead curses her: she can transform into a cheetah, but that brings a bloodthirsty euphoria, and when she’s in her human form, she experiences severe pain.

Barbara will be played by Kristen Wiig, whose final Cheetah form hasn’t been revealed yet – but what is now known is how she and Diana will meet. According to EW, Diana and Barbara will be co-workers, as Diana now works at the Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C. It’s a very fitting scenario for an archeologist and an immortal warrior to meet, and can also serve to build Barbara’s transformation.

How Steve Trevor Is Different In Wonder Woman 1984

Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) is coming back in Wonder Woman 1984, though how exactly that will happen remains to be seen. Of course, a lot has changed since Trevor’s sacrifice in Wonder Woman, and he won’t be the same guy viewers met in the first film. Pine shared to EW that in this new film his character is “more wide-eyed and joyful”, and is a “friend, lover, boyfriend-cum-bodyguard” helping Diana on her mission as best as he can, even calling Steve “the Watson to her Holmes”. Viewers have already gotten a brief look at this new Steve in the first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984, and although this change is a fun one, the one thing fans are eager to know is how or who will bring him back and why.

A Closer Look At Wonder Woman’s Golden Eagle Armor

The posters for Wonder Woman revealed Diana’s new costume, and the trailer gave the first look at her wearing the Golden Eagle Armor (with wings and all). Now, thanks to EW, there’s a closer and better look at it. According to it, Patty Jenkins found a reference of soldiers in Ancient Rome to help build the look of the armor, with costume designer Lindy Hemming teaming up with artisans and other designers to nail down multiple iterations of the wings.

The armor doesn’t really have a backstory in the comics, simply being a suit of gold armor with massive wings and a beaked helm that Diana uses in battle. The biggest questions, then, are how she will get a hold of it (as she can’t go back to Themyscira) and why she needs it now. On the bright side, the lack of story around the Golden Eagle Armor in the comics leaves many doors open for the team behind Wonder Woman 1984 to build an exciting one that fits with the narrative.

While it’s unlikely that Warner Bros. will choose to reveal Cheetah’s final form in a future trailer, teaser, or image, and it will definitely not share how Steve Trevor comes back, these reveals from the EW cover help build a clearer idea of what Wonder Woman 1984 will be about as well as the tone of the film – and that look at the armor is definitely appreciated, as it shows the amount of detail and all the hard work that the costume design department put into it.
