What happens when one of your favorite superheroes comes to life from the pages of a comic book? In Olympia by Curt Pires, Tony Pires, Alex Diotto, and Dee Cunniffe that’s exactly what occurred. Unfortunately, the comic book hero, Olympian, wasn’t the only thing to come to life and appear in the real world.

Olympia was created by the father/son duo Curt and Tony Pires. The two worked on the project as Tony went through cancer treatments. Sadly, Tony has since passed away, but the heartfelt project represents a final collaborative effort and goodbye for them.

In Olympia #4, the young boy, Elon, is at the house of the man who created Olympia, Kirby Spiegelman. In the previous issue, the life of the cartoonist is explored. Things aren’t going well for him as his checks aren’t coming in, he’s getting credit card calls from the bank, his house is about to foreclose, his relationship with his family is fractured and one of his closest friends just passed away. As Kirby is about to commit suicide, his gun jams and there’s a knock on his door - as Elon and Olympian have arrived on his doorsteps to figure out just what’s happening with his creations.

The fourth issue of the Image Comics series picks up directly after the events of Elon and Olympian’s encounter with Kirby. Kirby tells Elon how defeated he is with life as Olympian checks in to make sure his cartoonist creator doesn’t intend on harming his biggest fan. As the two have a confrontational back-and-forth, Elon tells them to rush inside and check out what’s happening on TV. Kirby utters “holy shit,” as he sees monsters invading the town of Olympia. Will Kirby have any answers for Elon and Olympian on how to stop the pending invasion? Much like Olympian, the monsters are very real, and already causing damage. It’s going to be a tremendous challenge for them to figure out how to stop the monster from causing more destruction.
