Right now, Ezra Miller has a healthy amount of fan support surrounding him for his take on Barry Allen/The Flash in the DCEU, after having made a brief appearance in Suicide Squad earlier this year, and the small scene featuring Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne and Miller in the Justice League comic-con trailer. This should all come as welcome news to the filmmakers at DC right now as well, since Miller’s version of Barry Allen will have to be at least as well-received as Grant Gustin’s has been in The Flash TV show in order for the two versions to be able to stand on their own.
Unfortunately, while his role in Justice League has already been filmed and completed, it’s been a difficult road for Miller’s standalone Flash movie so far, after losing both Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa as directors over the past several months. Judging by some of the actor’s latest comments though, those developments don’t seem to have decreased his excitement towards the character or his place in the DC Extended Universe by any means.
While speaking with Yahoo! Movies for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Miller opened up about putting on The Flash movie costume for the first time, and what it is that he loves about this version of Barry Allen:
“I’ll tell you that donning the Flash suit is one of the single most thrilling experiences I’ve ever known. You know it’s like a samurai getting in his armor. Every day, I just felt like, so cool. It’s the greatest. I really love playing the Flash. I love Barry Allen. I really, I’ve come to, yeah, I’ve come to really hold a special place in my heart for this neurotic but altruistic individual.
I’m just so excited to explore him and explore that for as long as possible. Even if it just means, this. Honestly, it’s an incredible gift to the world, the long history of the Flash. I feel so lucky to be a part of these great stories.”
It is interesting that Miller mentions Justice League possibly being his only chance at playing The Flash onscreen, even though he probably just meant that getting to play the character in that film alone would have been enough for him. After all, despite losing both of its directors, The Flash standalone film has a lot of promise in terms of talent already, after assembling an exciting cast for movie with Miller, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Billy Crudup as Henry Allen, and Ray Fisher set to reprise his role as Victor Stone/Cyborg in the film.
Now, depending on how long it takes for DC to find a replacement director for the project, and who they end up going with, it should be interesting to see how much this affects the film’s progress as a whole. Miller’s starpower has been on a steady rise over the past few years, and with roles in not only Justice League, but also Fantastic Beasts this year, he’s become a recognizable enough name to carry the film on his shoulders. His excitement and love of the character is more than clear in the footage we’ve seen of him in the role and the comments he’s made about it so far too. Now it’s just a matter of how the rest of the DCEU comes together around him that could influence the overall success of his take on this beloved character.
